The COVID-19 pandemic have forced people to stay at home and find new ways to work, learn, and be entertained.

To no one’s surprise, the majority of the population took to their smartphones and tablets to stay connected and entertained while stuck at home. A research from Sensor Tower reveals that there were about 37.8 billion apps downloaded globally during the second quarter of 2020, the peak of the pandemic.

As people resort to new ways to communicate and stay sane during the pandemic, apps in the Business, Social Networking, and gaming section were on an all-time high in the last three months.

However, people’s lack of ability to go places and events have badly impacted apps in the Travel, Navigation, and Sports categories.

The Q2 2020 record of 32.8 billion is 31.7% YoY higher than the 28.7 billion of the same quarter last year. The majority of these numbers came from Google Play downloads, which recorded 28.7 billion app downloads, while the Apple App Store contributes 9.1 billion to the numbers.

Sensor Tower reveals that video-conferencing app Zoom topped the most downloaded app list, which was installed in over 300 million devices in the last quarter. It’s followed by emerging social media app TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

For games, we have Save The Girl dominating the list with over 100 million downloads, followed by Garena Free Fire and PUBG Mobile. It’s worth mentioning that majority of game downloads are Android users. You can check the full report here.
