57 percent of users say social media helped them beat loneliness during the pandemic - Android

The role of social media platforms has never been more important as the COVID-19 pandemic hit us hard. The intensive lockdowns and quarantine have prevented us from meeting our loved ones.

To compensate, we result in social media platforms to stay connected. And from what it looks like, it’s a very effective medium.

Research firm We Are Social revealed that more than half of social media users, 57% to be exact, are saying that social media sites have helped them beat loneliness in the last couple of months of isolation.

It’s also no surprise that the percentage is higher for millennials and Gen Zs, who recorded 61% and 65%, respectively. On the other hand, Baby boomers, which rarely use or even has a social media account, only scored 43%.

Facebook still dominates the space with over 67% millennial users, 65% Gen Z, and 62% baby boomers.

Being in isolation may have also lessened the social media anxiety that most users have felt before as the research reveals that about 42% of users said they feel less pressured to post even the less flattering content during the lockdown. Even men are now sharing more candidly online.
