The most high-end model in Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup is the new iPhone 12 Pro Max.  While we’re waiting for its arrival in the Philippines, some of you might be asking, how is it different from its predecessor? Let’s see what it has to offer now, compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max in this specs comparison!

Design and Construction

The new iPhone 12 Pro Max comes slightly bigger with its 6.7-inch screen than the former that has 6.5-inch. The design keeps the same notch display housing the front camera, stereo speaker, and microphone. As an upgrade in the device’s protection, it is now equipped with Ceramic Shield with up to four times better drop performance than the former that uses a standard scratch-resistant glass. Both screens flaunt a Super Retina XDR OLED display with up to 1200nits. The iPhone 12 Pro Max, however, has a slightly higher display resolution at 2778 x 1284, but both support HDR content with Dolby Vision and HDR10.

For the body, alike with the iPhone 12 Pro, the latest Pro Max shows off a slimmer built with 7.4mm, while the former has 8.1mm. Although, both the latter and the former weigh the same at 226g.

Chipset

Powering the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the latest A14 Bionic chip based on a 5-nanometer architecture matched with the next-generation Neural Engine. Having said that, there has been an increased Neural Engine performance by doubling its cores from 8 to 16. This also renders an all-new image signal processor and powers Dolby Vision recording. The iPhone 11 Pro Max, on the other hand, comes with the earlier A13 Bionic chip with a third-generation Neural Engine.

Camera

Now for cameras, both iPhone 12 Pro Max and 11 Pro Max boast the same triple-rear cameras with 12MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 12MP telephoto. However, the latest Pro Max’s cameras have leveled up by sporting a new sensor-shift OIS to deliver more steady shots than before. More than that, the iPhone 12 Pro Max brings out better photos even at night, as it now supports Night Mode portraits and Night Mode time-lapse. It also supports the new Apple ProRAW feature, Smart HDR 3 for photos, and HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps.

Both iPhones have the same 12MP F2.2 TrueDepth front camera; however, the iPhone 12 Pro gets HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 30 fps, Night Mode, and Deep Fusion.

Moreover, the new iPhone 12 Pro Max also upgrades with a LiDAR scanner identified by Apple as the technology used for NASA Mars landing. The LiDAR makes night mode portraits possible, delivering faster autofocus in low light, and provides next-level AR experiences.

Memory and Connectivity

Storage-wise, the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at 128GB, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at a lower 64GB.

For connectivity, the iPhone 12 Pro now comes in 5G. It has a Smart Data Mode that automatically switches internet connectivity between 5G and LTE. More than that, the iPhone 12 Pro Max can enjoy the benefit of 1080p FaceTime HD video calls over cellular with the 5G connectivity. The iPhone 11 Pro Max, conversely, has 4G LTE. Retaining the same features, both are equipped with WiFi 6 with MIMO, NFC, VoLTE, FaceID, and Bluetooth 5.0.

More connectivity points present in the latest Pro are GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou, while the former has GPS/GNSS. Further, the two are equipped with IP68-certified for water and dust resistance. The latter only upgrades with an increased maximum depth of 6 meters as the iPhone 11 Pro Max supports only up to 4 meters for 30 minutes.

Other Features

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has added support with two wireless charging technologies: MagSafe and Qi. It is also now compatible with 20W adapters or higher, along with the option to purchase several MagSafe accessories, including a wireless charging-friendly and magnetic case with a wallet. However, the iPhone 11 Pro Max supports wireless charging and 18W wired fast charging. The charging adapter and wired EarPods for the new iPhone 12 Pro Max will now be sold separately as part of Apple’s new movement.

In terms of battery performance, both iPhones keep the same battery life of up to 20 hours of video playback.

Should you upgrade?

If you are going for a slightly bigger body, tougher screen, 5G connectivity, and an upgraded camera system, go for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Also, its sensor-shift OIS is a great feature for those who like shooting videos with their phones. The new LiDAR scanner might also convince you, as night mode portraits and time-lapse are now present in the new Pro Max. More added camera features such as deep fusion and night mode for the front camera and HDR photo and video recording are also part of its biggest leap.

But if you are still content with what its predecessor could give, including the 4G connectivity, its present camera features, and the same battery life, then sticking to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, would still serve you well, for now.

However, you can take more time to decide since the iPhone 12 series pricing in the Philippines is yet to be announced.
