According to the report of 9to5Mac, it has found references to the TrueDepth camera of macOS Big Sur which suggests the addition of Face ID on future Mac devices.

The new extension which was discovered on the beta 3 version of Apple’s latest macOS Big Sur contains codes that support “PearlCamera”. It is the same code used for TrueDepth camera and Face ID when it was still developing the iPhone X in 2017.

The report says that among the codes found within its extension include “FaceDetect” and “BioCapture” which also works for iOS. Further examination showed that the codes were mainly built for macOS and not just a code that the company forgot to remove.

The feature, once implemented, offers more convenience to users and brings biometrics to iMac models that don’t have Touch IDs like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

However, fans may need to wait longer for the feature to be available. Apple’s switch from Intel processors is also integral for the introduction of the Face ID on Mac devices as it requires the Neural Engine found on the current iPad and iPhones. The said neural network is mainly found on Apple SoCs which will be equipped on upcoming Mac devices. Apart from Face ID, the network also powers exclusive Apple features such as Animoji and ensures the optimized performance of augmented reality apps.

Apple’s switch from Intel processors to Apple-designed ARM chipsets grants the users to run iOS apps on their Mac devices.
