Sources from TechCrunch suggests that Carl Pei indeed has already left the company. Now, at 31 years old, it’s said that Pei is starting his own venture.
For a quick background, Pei played a key role in designing OnePlus devices in the last years. Most notably, the newly-released OnePlus Nord, which reintroduced the brand in the midrange market.
Primarily operating in the US and other countries, OnePlus is headquartered in Shenzhen, China. Still, Pei appeared in many trade conferences, media interviews, and interacting with customers outside the mainland.
Under Pei, OnePlus has created different marketing strategies to give its product the best position in the market. When their inventory is still limited, OnePlus managed to create a hype by selling its smartphones with invite-only schemes and other clever techniques.
It’s said that Carl Pei even lived in low-cost hotels around China and India to understand the market better. Hence, we’re treated with affordable flagship phones like the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 5T, and the OnePlus 8 series.
Pei initially wanted to work with Samsung and even publicly called them out in his personal blog. But in 2012, he reached out to Pete Lau, which lead to the creation of OnePlus a year later.
