The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has reported that it has deployed 7,556 Wi-Fi hotspots all over the country as part of its Free Wi-Fi for All Program (FW4A).

While far from the targeted 10,000 sites it aimed to reach by end-2020, the number of live sites still is a remarkable improvement with a 500% year-on-year increase on the yearly average deployment. The DICT was also able to more than double the total number of operational hotspots by 2020, as the program only had 3,251 sites from 2016 to 2019.

DICT-Budget-2021

Because of the faster deployment, the DICT reported that it has so far used up 93.89% of its FW4A budget for 2019 (which was extended through Republic Act No. 11464), bringing the department’s overall utilization rate of its 2019 budget to about 80%.

The DICT is targeting over 23,000 total Wi-Fi hotspots by end of 2021, with an earmarked ₱7.7 billion budget.
