The Department of Information and Communications Technology announced that they would be launching free WiFi sites in remote islands in Mindanao this March.
DICT will have to use wireless solutions instead of the traditional DSL or Fiber lines to reach these remote locations. With that, the agency will use Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) that will use dish satellites to make it possible.
Taganak and Mapun islands in Tawi-Tawi will be given two VSAT facilities each. Communities in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi (BASULTA) will also receive VSATs.
Moreover, the local government of Taganak Island will get four desktop computer packages and another four for Mapun Island LGU.
Mapun National High School and Turtle Islands National High School will then receive 21 thin client computers, which will be powered by a central server.
To distribute these internet access facilities, the Western Command of the AFP, headed by Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr. will pre providing the assist and security.
