Ford has sent out an official statement over its plan to incorporate Google’s Android operating system in its upcoming vehicles, with the exception of those being sold in China.

The move follows a six-year partnership between the car manufacturer and the tech giant which will see future Ford vehicles equipped with technology-based amenities often found in smart devices, like a reliable GPS, intuitive interface, responsive controls, and strong network connectivity.

While not a complete stranger to the adoption of smart features, Ford’s Sync infotainment system, albeit slick in design and implementation, has areas for improvement that Google’s prized operating system could provide. In particular, around the aspects of navigation, voice interaction, and the use of cloud services.

Aside from giving a necessary upgrade to Ford’s next vehicles, Android’s already established and robust ecosystem would give car owners access to a myriad of applications by third-party developers that would prove useful in their undertakings on the road.
