Research firm OpenSignal recently revealed that the download speeds and 4G availability in the Philippines have impressively improved in the last two years.
From Q4 2017 and Q1 of 2020 — before the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted download experience in the country — the download speeds of Filipino users grew from 4.7Mbps to 8.5Mbps. That’s a 3.8Mbps or 80.9% increase.
In terms of speeds, the duopoly — which will soon be broken by DITO Telecommunity and NOW Telecom — is lead by Smart Communications, Inc. The PLDT subsidiary has consistently won against Globe Telecom in terms of speed from Q4 of 2017 to Q1 of 2020.
In the course of about two years, Smart’s download speed experience rose to 84.2%. That’s a 6.1% lead over Globe’s 78.1% score. This is one of the reasons why OpenSignal recently praised Smart in its Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2020.
The improvement in 4G availability that happened in the last two years is seen as an important contributing factor to this achievement. 4G availability in the country increased by 19.5% points, with Smart still leading the race at 27.8% points (vs Globe’s 14.5%).
