The European Union (EU) block has come up with a bill that seeks to promote a pre-installed apps-free smartphone in the region, Financial Times reports.

Dubbed the Digital Service Acts, the draft vies to limit the power of big tech companies, including its ecosystem in the smartphone space. Part of the bill is a suggestion to remove pre-installed applications in electronic devices, especially smartphones and laptops, citing the consumers’ ability to decide for themselves.

While the said proposal did not state whether a total eradication of pre-installed applications—which is impossible for any operating system—or simply the inessentials, particularly third-party ones, it is quite clear where the concern is coming from.

The issue being an ever-growing concern with cybersecurity which renders the average tech user vulnerable to the controls of the purveyors of their devices, often unwittingly.
