In an experiment which vies to see the social media platform’s relevance in politics, Facebook is offering its Instagram and Facebook users to temporarily close their accounts in exchange for money. The social media campaign comes ahead of USA’s 2020 presidential election.
Washington Post reporter Elizabeth Dwoskin posted some screenshots displaying the offer as it appears on Instagram.
Just earlier this week, Facebook was quoted for collaborating with external researchers whose aim is to examine the impact of social media on society, particularly during the US 2020 election.

Making the offer tempting to the average social media user, Facebook is suggesting a base weekly pay of either $10, $15, or $20, which can be multiplied by the number of weeks (maximum of six) the user is willing to deactivate his account.
While a small population relative to its overall active users, Facebook is expecting around 200,000 to 400,000 people to be opting in to the campaign.
In a blog post, Facebook explains the reasoning behind the initiative as a means of “amplifying all that is good for democracy on social media, and mitigate against that which is not.” But one which demands a “more objective, dispassionate, empirically grounded research.”
