Tech giants Google and Apple officially removed popular battle royale game Fortnite on iOS and Android app stores.
The reason behind the ban is because Fortnite’s developer Epic Games unveiled on Thursday their new in-game payment system, which bypassed Apple’s 30% payment cut from purchases.
In a statement, Apple said that Epic Games has violated of the App Store guidelines which is “designed to keep the store safe for our users.”
The feud between the two companies isn’t new, as Epic Games is very vocal about Apple’s 30% cut from in-app purchases. They also had the same issue with Google, which is the reason why it wasn’t initially available in the Play Store.
As a result of the ban, the developer has launched an antitrust lawsuit accusing the iOS app store as a monopoly. They also published a protest video on YouTube (embedded above) and encouraged its fans to join the #FreeFornite movement.
Google’s issue with Epic Games is similar. And despite the Play Store‘s more lax guidelines, it is clear that developers should use the Google’s own billing when providing in-app purchases for its users. Like Apple, Google also takes a 30% cut for each transaction.
