Earlier this month, the Malacañang tasked the National Telecommunications Commission to check if Smart and Globe has improved their services and heeded President Duterte’s yearend ultimatum. So far, the two industry giants have made substantial efforts in expanding their networks per their progress reports.
In its December 7 press release, Globe mentioned it has erected 1,050 new cell sites so far, plus 10,876 4G/LTE upgrades for existing sites. Globe expects completion of 1,300 more sites by yearend.
The yearend will also see Globe completing 600,000 broadband lines, a 55-percent year-on-year increase. As for the 5G rollout, the telecom aims to cover 80 percent of Metro Manila this month. It currently has 708 5G-enabled sites across the country.
Meanwhile, PLDT‘s fiber infrastructure has surpassed 422,000 kilometers as of November. Its total number of LTE and 3G towers is 58,000 as of November, a 20-percent year-on-year increase.
For 5G, its subsidiary Smart has built 496 new sites. PLDT now has more than 10,000 cell sites nationwide.
Both telecoms aim to build 2,000 more cell sites in 2021. Expansion has recently been aggressive, thanks to easing of excessive regulations or red tape.
