Japan’s birth rate have been in decline in the last few years. So to help its people find a partner, the country will fund artificial intelligence (AI) matchmaking schemes.
In 2019, the total number of babies born in the country was below 865,000, which is the lowest in years. The country’s peak population was 128 million last 2017, which they expect to be less than 53 million by the end of the century.
With that, in 2021, the Japanese government will allocate JPY 2 billion (around Php900 million) to its local government.
Matchmaking services performed by humans already exist for years. Some of these service providers use AI systems that can do a more detailed and accurate analysis of each person to find the perfect match for them.
Albeit, these AI systems have limited capabilities and only consider criteria like age and income. With the funding, local governments can gain access to more advanced systems that can also consider values, hobbies, and more.

However, a Japanese anthropologist in Japan said that there are other ways that the government can help mend the declining population. One of them is by helping young people with low income, who lose interest in romantic relationships.
