Design

Processor

This is an easy win for the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G. It’s powered by a Kirin 810 5G processor, which is said to outperform the Snapdragon 730G of the Samsung Galaxy A71 in the recent AnTuTu top 10 list.

Both devices come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, pretty standard for smartphones at this price. However, the storage expansion on the Galaxy A71 would be easier since it accepts a standard microSD card, while the former uses Huawei’s NM cards.

Camera

Other than that, they share the same 64-megapixel main camera that should take decent photos for the price.

But to Huawei’s credit, the Nova 7 SE does come with 960fps of slow-mo video recording. And based on our experience, the Huawei camera app handles night mode shots better. It also has dual video functionality, which lets you use the front and back cameras at the same time.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A71 comes with a 4,500mAh battery, which is only slightly bigger than the 4,000mAh capacity of the former.

To make up for it, the Nova 7 SE comes with a 40W Huawei SuperCharge, a feature we only saw on their flagship releases. That’s almost two times faster than the 25W charger that comes with the Samsung Galaxy A71.

Others

The main selling point of the Huawei Nova 7 SE is its 5G connectivity, which makes it the first 5G midrange phone in the country. You’d be ready once 5G coverage becomes widely available in the Philippines.

However, the lack of Google Mobile Services is still the main concern for most buyers. But if you don’t want to go through the hassle, then you might be better off settling with the Samsung Galaxy A71 that has GMS.

The new Kirin 810 5G processor also allowed the Nova 7 SE to have the newer Bluetooth 5.1 that is more battery efficient an reliable.

We also prefer the reliability of a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. But most people might go with the futuristic in-display biometrics of the Galaxy A71.

Conclusion

If it’s all about specs and hardware, Huawei Nova 7 SE easily takes the win in this battle. Owners of this device will have the privilege of owning the first 5G-enabled midrange phone in the Philippines.

There’s also the powerful Kirin 820 5G processor, which is said to be the fastest in the midrange space. Plus, a flagship-level 40W charging support.

Still, the lack of GMS support can be a bummer to most people. So if you don’t wanna bother tinkering, then you might be better off settling with the Samsung Galaxy A71 that has a more workable software.

On the downside, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is actually more expensive than the former. This thing costs Php22,990, while the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G retails for only Php19,990. That’s a Php3,000 price difference and in this case, that’s probably the cost of having GMS. But in case you have a little more budget, the Huawei Nova 7 5G is also available for Php23,990.
