This continued the winning streak when the market bounced back in Q3 2020 after being hit by the global health crisis. The strong second-half sales resulted in 5% growth from the previous year, with 18.9 million units shipped collectively.

According to IDC, the spike came from pent-up demand. Plus, existing and new brands were able to push shipments thanks to retail expansion in provincial areas.

For Q4 2020, OPPO stole the top spot from Realme. IDC reveals it’s due to their focus on the Php5,000-Php10,000 price segment. That includes devices like the OPPO A12. Shipments of 5G smartphones also gained momentum thanks to the budget-friendly Reno 4Z.

Realme might’ve dropped to the second spot, but it was able to double its YoY shipments thanks to the Realme C15, C12, and other entry-level offerings.

Budget releases like the Y11 and Y20i also helped Vivo keep a seat on the top spot at number 3.

Transsion, the company behind Itel, Infinix, and emerging brand Tecno, managed to take the fourth position by releasing budget phones like the Infinix Hot 10 and TECNO Spark 6 Go.

Sadly, prominent brand Samsung stayed at number 5. The Galaxy S21 series might be interesting, but it’s the affordable releases like the Galaxy A11 and A12s that were big moneymakers.
