The Malacañang through spokesperson Harry Roque told Smart, Globe, and other major internet service providers to shape up so that Filipinos could experience world-class Internet service.

While acknowledging the telcos’ recently reported improvements, the Palace pointed out that these might still not be enough to meet the demands and desires of Filipino consumers. He added that telcos should further advance their improvements so that the country could at least be on par with the likes of Vietnam and Thailand.

In Ookla’s latest assessment, as reported by the National Telecommunications Commission, the Philippines ranked below average among Asian countries, specifically at 32nd place out of 50 for fixed broadband and 34th for mobile.

Representatives of the telcos at the conference said their companies would comply to the request of providing world-class Internet service. They point out the cutting of red tape and public-private investments as crucial to further improvements.
