The implementation of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in light of the ongoing crisis has saw a shift in 4G user behavior that drastically affected the quality of mobile network, particularly in the rural areas.

Opensignal, which had been conducting a study on the phenomenon of Filipino’s increasing utilization of mobile internet, especially during the ECQ, is the source of the report.

Subject to the examination includes five macro-regions across the country, namely North, Central, and South Luzon, Visayas, as well as Mindanao. It made use of the Philippine Statistics Authority’s definition of the rural/urban areas.

The research has been ongoing since September 2019 until May 2020, lasting a total of seven months.

According to the data gathered, between the urban and rural areas, the latter appear to have seen a decreased in quality delivery. The study deduced it as coming from a shift in users’ behavior towards data consumption, relative to location.

Not only have the users been consuming more data during the lockdown, they are also significantly in areas where the delivery of service is not as optimal as in the city. These include places such as the suburbs and the rural.
