Slam Dunk, which follows the story of aspiring high school basketball player Hanamichi Sakuragi, has been voted as the third most popular manga of all-time — and its large fan base is in for a treat as a new Slam Dunk movie has been announced.
The manga’s own creator, Inoue Takehiko, made the announcement on Twitter last Thursday, January 7, 2021. A website for the movie (slamdunk-movie.jp) was also put up alongside it. It doesn’t reveal much about the movie, but it has a widget that shows the latest tweet from @mobie_slamdunk page.
Not many details about the movie have been revealed yet. Especially if Toei Animation, the folks behind Slam Dunk’s popular anime series from the ’90s, will be involved.
We’re not surprised that Slam Dunk is getting another movie. In fact, we’re curious as to why it took so long for it to have a follow-up feature film. This would be the fifth Slam Dunk movie as four titles came out from 1994 to 1995.
It has been one of the most commercially successful manga in history, with over 120 million copies sold.

Slam Dunk was also considered as third of the most popular manga of all time, only behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and One Piece.
Filipinos have been attached to Sakuragi’s story as it used to air on a local free TV channel from the ’90s to early 2000’s.
