It appears that Huawei’s international woes is also affecting its domestic operations.
Counterpoint Research’s Market Pulse for February 2021 reveals that OPPO has surpassed Huawei, finally placing a new name on the top spot. The reason is pretty obvious: Huawei is declining, resulting to brands like OPPO to rise.
Last January 2021, OPPO managed to get 21% of the pie in China. Vivo, another BKK brand, tied with Huawei at second spot with 20%. They are then followed by Apple and Xiaomi, which both had a 16% market share.
OPPO managed to grow by 33% last January, compared to 26% from the same month last year. Apparently, OPPO’s 5G models such as the Reno 5 series are what helped them go on top.
In fact, 65% of all the smartphones sold in China are 5G-enabled smartphones.
Huawei also has 5G phones, but they are meant for the flagship market, where the margins are higher, but the sale volume is low. If you remember, Huawei hoarded flagship 5G chips before the trade ban took effect. But now that affordable 5G chips have emerged, it appears that they don’t have access to them.
Huawei’s decline also helped other brands. Xiaomi’s online business are on a boom, while OPPO and Vivo’s offline sales are improving.
Besides the ban, Huawei’s sale of the Honor sub-brand has also contributed on its sharp decline.
