According to Opensignal, Philippines is one of the countries that showed significant improvements in video experience and 4G availability.
Opensignal’s latest study “The State of Mobile Network Experience: 2020 One Year into the 5G Era” shows consumer mobile experience from January to March 30, 2020, and compared it to last year’s numbers. And the results for the Philippines are much better than expected.
According to the study, the Philippines’ Video Experience score improved by 32%, giving our country an Excellent rating. We’re actually fourth on the most improved list in this category, with Thailand at third, Nepal second and Senegal first.
Coincidentally, download speeds in the Philippines showed some of the largest percentage improvements with a Download Speed Experience of 21.5% compared from last year.

As for 4G availability, the Philippines had significant improvements as well. The study shows the score jumped to 81.5%. That is actually the percentage of time Filipinos are connected to a 4G network.
The numbers are impressive, to say the least, and very much needed given that many of us are at home during these difficult times.
Smart did its part, by increasing the number of its LTE base stations by 10% compared to end-2019. It also increased the capacity of its LTE network by reallocating its assigned 1800 Mhz frequency from 2G to 4G/LTE.
As a result, 3,785 Smart base stations are now providing additional capacity for its LTE network. To date, Smart LTE is available in 91% of the country’s municipalities and serves 94% of the population.
We expect those numbers to further improve. Early this August, DILG has approved 1,502 telco permits for additional cell towers which should boost network speeds, stability and coverage once complete.
