To ensure its passenger and employee’s safety while coping up on the new normal, the country’s flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL), shares its safety flying measures as it prepares to resume its regular commercial flights in June. The protocol focuses more on securing the airplane cabins, wearing of PPEs and face masks, early check-in of luggage, and medical evaluation of both cabin crew and passengers upon boarding.
All PAL aircraft are required to filter the cabin air from top to bottom, every 2 to 3 minutes, through the High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestor (HEPA) that trap viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants. Boeing, Airbus, and De Havilland aircraft also undergo rigorous cabin disinfection to ensure that every surface is wiped clean. This also includes the lavatories and cabin areas that are maintained by the cabin crew.
Before boarding on their respective flight assignments, all PAL pilots and cabin crew will undergo a medical evaluation. Crew members who are cleared to travel will be given specially-designed Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) uniforms, including face masks and shields, which they should wear on every flight.
PAL will also enforce a “no-mask, no-fly” policy to require passengers in bringing and wearing face masks and other coverings and observing hand hygiene practices. Carry-on bags with more than 7 kilos (15 lbs), the maximum length of 56 cm (22 inches), the width of 36 cm (14 inches), and the height of 23 cm (9 inches), will not be allowed.
Passengers are encouraged to observe social distancing on boarding gates, airport shuttle buses, and business class lounges. They are also required to walk through disinfection tents, floor mats, and thermal scanners placed at the airport. To secure their boarding passes, they may do it via online checking. They may still fall in line in the check-in counters and ticket offices. However, it will be equipped with transparent barriers to protect the staff inside. Those who are deployed on the counters should wear face masks, shields, and gloves at all times.
To minimize contact, inflight meals and beverages will also be served in secure packaging following the procedures of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP). Distribution of reading materials will now be prohibited during the flight.
Lastly, to ensure that globally accepted standards and safety protocols set by the International Air Transport Association, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the E.U. Aviation Safety Agency, and the World Health Organization, the airline company will continue to collaborate with the health authorities in the Philippines and at every overseas station.
The airline also released the initial list of domestic flights that will resume on June 8 to 30, 2020:
