Displeased with the sluggish performance that sees a foreign contractor unable to meet half of the demand of the agreement in the free Wi-Fi program, Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, via spokesperson Harry Roque, has expressed its desire to cancel existing business concord with the said firm and claim a refund.

With only a year left to his term, Duterte’s promise of free internet for the public is, by far, a stray from its comprehensive promise with only 10,000 of the supposed 120,000 sites established, four years after the project was greenlit.

An undertaking that was originally under the hands of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), a contractor was eventually sought after when the agency came short-handed to meet the project’s overwhelming demand.

But that was then—now, the government body is more than capable as evidenced by its 500% better output in 2020 alone than what the servicer has achieved throughout its operations since.

Through its promising performance, the government is confident that DICT would be able to meet the target goal before the current president’s term ends and leave the office.
