Even with the prospect of getting penalized by millions, it seems Internet service providers still cannot be bothered to deliver top-notch speeds. A legislator has expressed his disappointment over the fact that the Philippines has the second slowest mobile Internet among ASEAN countries.

Makati City Rep. Luis Campos Jr., author of the House Bill 7479 or the Public Telecommunications Act of the Philippines, is citing the latest figures from the Ookla Speedtest Global Index.

Globally, the country currently ranks 110th for mobile Internet with an average download speed of 18.49 Mbps. For fixed broadband, it’s 28.69 Mbps for average download, with a global rank of 103rd.

In comparison, the top-ranking country for fixed broadband (globally and in the ASEAN) is Singapore with 241.10 Mbps. Limiting to Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia has the slowest mobile Internet at 17.45 Mbps. Hopefully, the billions of investments in infrastructure by our ISPs will improve the Philippine rankings in the near future.
