Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 announced as its first 5G-ready budget chip - Android

Finally, Qualcomm has a chipset to go against MediaTek’s 5G-rigged entry-level chips. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 is an 8nm chip with an integrated Snapdragon X51 5G modem-RF system that can support both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks.

As for the CPU, the Snapdragon 480 has 2.0GHz Cortex-A76 performance cores and 1.8GHz Cortex efficiency cores. Handling the graphics is an Adreno 619 GPU.

Qualcomm claims that it’s two times faster than the Snapdragon 460 in CPU and GPU performance, while AI workload will be 70% faster with the Qualcomm Hexagon 686 chip.

Besides 5G, the Snapdragon 480 will bring other modern connectivity features like WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, SA and NSA 5G modes, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DDS).

It can support up to FHD+ screens with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Qualcomm Spectra 345 ISP can use all three cameras at the same time. Speaking of which, it can handle 64-megapixel sensors with 1080p @ 60fps video recording.

Devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 will come on 5G-enabled budget phones from Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Nokia, and Motorola by the first quarter of 2021.
