Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 690 5G, the first 5G-ready chipset slated for mid-range smartphones.
The chipset, which is made on an 8nm process and based on ARM Cortex architectures, is the successor of the Snapdragon 875 processor. Paired with an X51 modem, the chipset supports SA, NSA, and other global 5G bands in sub-6GHz and has a maximum download speed up to 2.5 Gbps. It is the first Snapdragon 600-series chipset to feature the latest AI Engine ARCASOFT and Hexagon Tensor Accelerator for running AI apps and filters smoothly, improving its AI performance by 70% compared to its predecessor. This also makes the zooming transitions of telephoto, ultra-wide, and wide camera sensors seamless.
The Snapdragon 690 5G also improves mobile photography by enabling 4K HDR video recording at 30fps, photo capturing up to 192MP via Qualcomm Spectra 355L ISP, faster autofocus, and noise reduction to make subjects sharper. Backed up by Adreno 619L GPU, the processor supports FHD+ displays with a 120HZ refresh rate.
In terms of connectivity and battery, the processor supports dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+. It has aptX?Adaptive Audio for low-latency and high sound quality.
Mobile devices with Snapdragon 690 will be available in the global market by the second half of 2020. Among the brands that are expected to carry the processors on their lineup of mid-range smartphones are Sharp, LG, Nokia, Motorola, Wingtech, and TCL.
