Does the lack of a smartphone prohibit you from participating in online classes? Today, we’ll be comparing two capable smartphones that don’t break the bank so you don’t miss out on school works.

First, we have the Redmi 9C — which is just one of the many bang-for-the-buck smartphones that Xiaomi offers in the Philippines.

We’ll be stacking that device to the Vivo Y11, which just got more affordable with the release of a new 2GB/32GB model.

Just like the former, this entry-level smartphone aims to deliver a reliable performance for those who need it, without having to break their wallets.

Design and Build Quality

The Vivo Y11 has a glass-like plastic material that’s available in Mineral Blue, Agate Red, and the Skyline Blue that’s exclusive to the more expensive 3GB model. It does look premium, but this reflective and color gradient design is starting to look old and worn out.

Personally, we do prefer the Redmi 9C’s design. It has a plastic-y look, but the vibrant colors make it more eye-catching than the former.

You can get it in Twilight Blue and a really bright Sunrise Orange color. A more subtle Midnight Grey (Black) model was also introduced, but it’s not clear if it will arrive in the Philippines.

The build quality, as expected, isn’t the best on both handsets. You might want to use the free protective case on the Y11 while the Redmi 9C doesn’t come with one so you have to purchase it separately. Although, just like a lot of phones today, they should ship with a pre-installed screen protector on the box.

Display and Audio

Both Redmi 9C and Vivo Y11 come with HD+ IPS displays. That’s a pretty common display spec for the price, and they do the job just right.

Although, the larger 6.53-inch size on the Redmi 9C, versus the 6.35-inch on the Y11, gives it a one-up in this department.

As for audio, both models have single loudspeakers for participating in conference calls, listening to music, or watching videos. For a more immersive experience, you can plug in a pair of headphones via the 3.5mm jack. On the downside, due to their affordable price tag, neither have earphones included in the box.

Performance

The MediaTek Helio G35 octa-core processor on the Redmi 9C was built to improve the gaming performance on entry-level smartphones. Along with it is a reliable performance in other tasks.

With that, it goes without saying that the Redmi 9C shall offer better performance than the Vivo Y11, which still uses an aging and less-powerful Snapdragon 439 processor. Although, the Qualcomm chipset still leads in battery efficiency.

The newer processor also allowed the Redmi 9C to have more reliable and power-friendly Bluetooth 5.0. It also has an infrared blaster if you want to control your non-smart TV or any IR-enabled appliances using your phone.

Camera

You need the best possible camera you can have if you’re using the phone primarily for online classes and video conferences. In this case, the Vivo Y11 has a sharper 8-megapixel selfie camera than the 5-megapixel on the latter. But considering the other advantages that the latter have, compromising to a 5-megapixel front cam shouldn’t be the worst idea.

Both devices also have the same 13-megapixel primary camera and 2-megapixel depth sensor. The Redmi 9C gets an extra point by having a dedicated 5-megapixel macro camera.

Battery

As you can see in our specs comparison table above, both the Redmi 9C and Vivo Y11 have the same 5,000mAh battery capacity with adecent 10W fast charger.

But then again, since it uses a more power-efficient Qualcomm processor, we expect better longevity on the Vivo Y11.

Conclusion

Two of the most important components to consider when buying an entry-level phone is the processing performance and price. With this in mind, the Redmi 9C have clearly won this specs battle.

It sports a more powerful MediaTek Helio G35 processor and Xiaomi was able to accomplish this by having a cheaper price tag. The Redmi 9C 2GB/32GB model retails for only Php5,290. That’s about Php200 cheaper than the Vivo Y11‘s Php5,499 price with the same RAM/storage configuration.

Even the 9C’s top model makes more sense than the Y11’s. It comes with 3GB/64GB config for only Php5,990. That’s about Php500 cheaper than the top-tier Y11, which ironically only has 32GB of storage.
