A bill allowing the change of the school opening in elementary and secondary-levels is now a law.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed into a law Republic Act No. 11480 that amends Republic Act No. 7797 providing that opening of classes should be on the first Monday of June and the last day of August. The president signed it on July 17 but was publicly released only on July 20.

The new law also includes that the president, upon the recommendation of the secretary may provide different dates of the opening of classes in the country or any parts. The law also states that the DepEd is authorized to open classes on Saturday for elementary and college levels in public and private schools, including foreign or international institutions.
The DepEd has already announced that school opening will be on August 24, maximizing blended learning methods amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes using online lectures and classes, TV, radio, and a modular mode of teaching.
Currently, COVID-19 cases are still increasing in the Philippines. As of writing, there are more than 67,000 positive cases in the country.
