A new report from Counterpoint Research reveals that Samsung is still on top in terms of global smartphone shipments last August 2020.

From Samsung’s 20% figures last April, their global smartphone share in August 2020 was up by 2% at 22%. Meanwhile, its close competitor, Huawei, continues to suffer from the US sanctions to them.

Huawei’s smartphone share is down by 5%. From 21% in April, it continues to slide down to 16%, ultimately widening its gap with Samsung by 4%.

Pretty much the entire smartphone industry had slowed down when most markets went into lockdown and quarantine. However, Samsung was able to rebound when select markets reopened back in July and August.

One of the biggest smartphone markets in the world, India, also helped with Samsung’s numbers. As the tensions between India and China intensifies, the Indian market resorted to non-Chinese brands like Samsung.

Samsung’s aggressive marketing, and possibly its new bang-for-the-buck smartphones like the Galaxy M series, also helped them reach more people in India.

Moreover, Apple kept its position at number three with the same 12% market share in April and August. We expect these numbers to go up now that the older iPhones are discounted, and the new iPhone 12 series enter the picture.

Xiaomi was up by 11% (from 8%), another effect of Huawei’s decreasing popularity. We’ll see if the numbers change once we enter the holiday season.
