Are we giving up our sovereignty just to enjoy cheap unlimited mobile data?

During the plenary debate on the bill to extend DITO Telecommunity‘s franchise by 25 years, Senator Risa Hontiveros made her apprehensions known on whether the Chinese government had been the calling the shots for the new telecom.

Other senators, including Senators Richard Gordon and Franklin Drilon also expressed alarm over possible surveillance activities that the Asian superpower could conduct in the country.

Despite the qualms by the senators, DITO’s franchise bill has been approved on the second Senate reading. Fortunately, to address the concerns on national security, revisions have been made to the bill.

These revisions include the disclosure to the President and Congress any acts of information sharing to foreign governments, the compliance with annual audits, and the reallocation of redundant frequencies held by DITO Telecommunity. Failure to comply with these measures placed in the bill could mean revocation of the franchise.
