Sony’s console line has outputted fantastic titles such as Uncharted, Gran Turismo, God Of War, The Last Of Us, etc., over the years. With the recent job listing in Greenhouse, PlayStation Studios is searching for someone to occupy the Head of Mobile for their offices in San Mateo or Los Angeles. This shift from Sony is understandable due to the massive demographic of mobile gaming today, but how will it pan out for them? Continue reading to see what Sony’s mobile game strategy is and what we know so far.
The job listing opens with the standard formal introduction of goals and who PlayStation is. However, the statement that caught our attention says, “As Head of Mobile, you will own and develop the mobile games strategy for PlayStation Studios and help build a foundation for future growth opportunities. You will lead all aspects of the expansion of our game development from consoles and PCs to mobile & Live Services with a focus on successfully adapting PlayStation’s most popular franchises for mobile.”
The takeaway from this is that the Head of Mobile will be leading the expansion of PlayStation’s game development from PCs to mobile and will be focusing on the adaptation of PlayStation’s most popular franchises—a huge responsibility if you ask me.
Areas of responsibilities and expectations were also indicated for the position of Head of Mobile, such as the promotion of vision, mission, strategy for mobile game development, and advertisement success. The position will also partner with PlayStation Studios’ leadership team to develop a product roadmap for 3-5 years, resuming existing mobile slates that are already in development, and finally, build out capabilities in mobile live operations.
PlayStation also announced the termination of PlayStation stores for their PS3, PSP, and PS Vita consoles on the 27th of August 2021. This announcement can indicate that they are allocating more resources for future mobile game adaptations from their triple-A titles. The termination is understandable since recent smartphone releases have become more powerful than the dated handheld consoles from Sony. The Vita, the PSP, or even the Xperia play—remember that?
Sony, however, isn’t a stranger to mobile games because of their previous releases, such as Uncharted: Fortune Hunter, which is available for Android and iOS. But this can be considered long and forgotten by Sony because its last update was 5 years ago— 5 whole years. So maybe they are picking up where they left off, with new sights and new objectives.
Not much has come out from this, and Sony is still probably screening through applications. Updates about this will probably come later this year at best, if not next year, so stick around for more updates on this and see how it pans out.
