If you’ve been following the news regarding Facebook, then you know a disturbing number of its users—533 million globally—have their accounts compromised, with their personal information leaked publicly online. For its part, the National Privacy Commission is investigating how many of those jeopardized accounts belong to Filipinos.
Initial information obtained by the NPC estimates the number of affected Filipino accounts at 879,699. Personal information associated with those accounts, including contact information, full names, physical addresses, and biographical details, are currently published and freely accessible at a low-level hacking forum.

The NPC has contacted the data privacy officer of Facebook Philippines and is currently awaiting a response on the matter. In the meantime, it advises users especially the ones affected by the large-scale breach to practice caution. The privacy watchdog recommends the use of two-step authentication in order to protect personal information.
