In an era where distance learning has become a trend, many students have been taking advantage of the situation for good grades—even going so far as to hire others to do their school work for them.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, however, considers it as one of the many forms of “distance cheating,” subsequently calling for the attention of the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), as well as the academia into probing and mitigating the issue.

It is not just the scholars who are in on the trend of the “sagot-for-sale” phenomenon as parents of students themselves appear keen on helping out in the process, willing to pay between Php150 to Php500, depending on the project. Conversely, some parents are even making a side hustle with the opportunity by taking the students’ school projects unto themselves.

Where there is demand, so are the purveyors of services that cater to them. So much so, in fact, that the hashtags #AcademicService, #AcademicWriting, and #AcademicCommissions, among others, are gaining traction in social media.

But as studies are meant to be a personal endeavor for each pupil, the Philippine senator was concerned that the furor could dampen not only just the competencies of today’s scholarly people, but also their integrity. Hence, the call-to-action against it.
