Amid escalating tension between the US and China, TikTok and other Chinese social media apps deemed a security risk to Americans may soon no longer be accessible in the US.
The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News on Monday that the US is “certainly looking at” banning TikTok and other social media apps with even the slightest connection to China, and that they are “taking this very seriously.”
To Pompeo, Americans should only download TikTok if they want their personal information to be collected and exploited by the Chinese Communist Party.
The US government has long been campaigning against companies based in China, including Huawei and ZTE, claiming that these companies are used by the Chinese government for espionage.
Last week, the Indian government banned TikTok and 58 Chinese-made apps. TikTok itself was recently accused by ‘Anonymous’ as a spying app. It was also caught snooping on the iOS clipboard.
