A new security feature will arrive on Tinder and other apps owned by the Match Group.
This new feature became possible thanks to Garbo, which Match Group has recently invested on. It’s a nonprofit that can allow users to run background checks on a potential date by only keying their full name or first name and phone number.
As per Garbo, they can present people’s background checks from public records and reports of violence or abuse. That includes harassment, restraining orders, convictions, arrests, and other crimes.
Garbo also said that they could accept submitted police reports, orders of protection, restraining orders, and others.
In a blog post, Garbo said that it won’t make drug possession charges public to take an “active stance toward equity”. Garbo said that research shows a disproportionate percentage of African black people being arrested for drug-related crimes than whites.
They also said that drug-related crimes don’t always result in gender-based violence, which the nonprofit is mainly preventing. Traffic violations are also not included.

On the downside, the feature won’t be free. Currently, Match and Garbo are working together to figure out the pricing to make the feature accessible to many users.
The new Tinder feature will enter testing in the coming months. Once it hits Tinder, it will be available in other dating apps like OkCupid, Match, and Hinge.
Since Garbo is US-based, it’s not clear if the feature will hit other countries like the Philippines.
