Employees in an iPhone assembly plant in Bangalore, India turned violent on Saturday, over complaints of labor exploitation, sweatshop conditions, and up to four months’ worth of unpaid wages.
Over 100 people have been arrested so far for damages and alleged looting at an assembly plant owned by Winstron, a Taiwanese company to which Apple outsources assembly and production of iPhones. Winstron itself has outsourced the recruitment of its workforce to Indian staffing firms.

Videos that have gone viral over the Internet show glass panels, cars, CCTV cameras, and other company property being flipped, smashed, set on fire, or otherwise destroyed. Winston estimates the total cost of damages to be around $60 million. Operations at the plant have been suspended.
As reported by Times of India, chaos erupted when the employees found out their salaries have been reduced. A source claimed that engineering graduates who had been promised a monthly salary of Rs 21,000 (approx. ₱13,700) were getting Rs 12,000 (~₱7,800) instead for the last few months. Non-engineering graduates, meanwhile, saw their salary lowered to Rs 8,000 (~₱5,200).
