Finally, someone has come up with it. Meet the new Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology.

Wireless chargers allow you to place your device on top of a puck-like device. However, what if you still want to use the device when charging, or if you want your phone to charge right away the moment you enter a room? That’s where the new Xiaomi Mi Air Charge comes in.

As per Xiaomi, it offers “remote charging technology” that can charge different devices simultaneously while they are being used and not stationary.

In a blog post, Xiaomi detailed that the charger can transmit 5W of power on your device. So expect a not-so-fast charging speed with this, especially if you’re using it.

The transmitter it self is quite large, almost the size of a side-table.

Unlike the Qi wireless charging standard, this machine requires a proprietary method to work. A smartphone needs to be outfitted with an array of miniaturized antennas with a built-in beacon antenna and a receiving antenna array.

The smartphone will have 14 antennas that will convert the millimeter-wave signal emitted by the charging pile. The said signal will be converted to electric energy via the rectifier circuit.

As per Xiaomi, the Mi Air Charge can provide 5W of power under several meter radius. Physical obstructions won’t be a big problem, but it will have some caveats. The power it supplies and the coverage should be improved soon.

What’s interesting is, it has applications other than charging phones. As per Xiaomi, it should also help charge speakers, desk lamps, and other small IoT smart home devices for a completely wireless ecosystem.

The official release date and pricing for the Xiaomi Mi Air Charge are yet to be announced as of writing.
