Out with the old, in with the new. With TCL Communication stopping its production by the end of this month, a different company has snatched an agreement with BlackBerry and FIH Mobile Limited to develop a 5G Android smartphone and market it under the BlackBerry brand.
OnwardMobility, a startup company based in Texas, has set the first half of 2021 as the earliest time it releases its first BlackBerry smartphone for the North American and European markets. Per the company’s press release, the phone will appeal towards the enterprise and professionals.
The new BlackBerry phone will also have 5G connectivity so it can meet the productivity demands of the workplace. Like BlackBerry devices in the past, the new phone will have the brand’s signature feature: a physical keyboard.
OnwardMobility CEO Peter Franklin says the development of the new phones will be done in close coordination with BlackBerry and FIH Mobile Limited, a Foxconn subsidiary, in order to deliver a sleek and secure device.
With 2021 expected to be when 5G becomes widely available worldwide, OnwardMobility plans to launch more 5G BlackBerry smartphones later that year.
