In a bid to keep our forests green, an application aimed at combatting illegal logging is currently being developed, according to a Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) official.
Once rolled out, the app will be focused towards the logistics that are involved in the wood trade, specifically by expediting the accurate and rapid identification of all moving timber and lumber that go through checks and inspection while on the road, as per FPRDI Director Romulo Aggangan as mentioned to the Philippine News Agency on Monday.
The developing software will help guarantee that only certain species of trees are harvested or imported and/or utilized by those in the industry. Conversely, the application will have a strict monitoring over those which are classified as illegal for harvesting and trade.
“DOST-FPRDI is the authority in the identification of wood and timber products in the country. It maintains more than 16,000 Philippine and foreign wood samples, and 2600 plant specimens,” said Aggangan.
