Google’s Wear OS for smartwatches is getting a much-needed upgrade that’s coming later this year.
Based on Android 11, which itself is yet to fully release, Google’s upcoming wearable OS will be replacing the current version that’s still based on Android 9 Pie. Google claims that eligible smartwatches will load apps 20% faster when they upgrade to the new version.
Besides performance, improvements include a simplified pairing processor, better intuitive controls for switching between modes, and a new weather app with easy-to-digest forecasts, alerts and other information.

In light of the pandemic, there’s even a hand-wash timer that shows whether a user has washed his hands long enough.
The upcoming version will also include support for the Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor, which is 85% faster and lasts 25% longer in terms of battery life than the 3100. Support for LTE has also been improved.
Google says more Wear OS updates will follow in 2021.
