The pandemic has forced schools to hold online classes so students and teachers can stay safe at home. But if you still don’t have a device for homeschooling, then you might want to check out these budget options.

First, we have the Vivo Y11 — which recently became more affordable with the new 2GB/32GB model. This device has been equipped with a set of features that makes it a decent daily driver smartphone.

We’ll be comparing the Y11 with the Realme C11, another entry-level smartphone that sits in the sub-Php5,000 range.

Just like the former, Realme wants to cater to those who want a reliable smartphone that doesn’t break the bank — whether you’re using it for school, work, gaming, or entertainment.

Design and Build Quality

You really can’t expect fancy Gorilla Glass or all-metal builds on smartphones that are this cheap. Most devices in this price are made of plastic, and these two are no exemption. But despite the second-rate build, they should feel sturdy enough. Just make sure you slap in a protective case for extra peace of mind.

Pretty much all Android phones today come with pre-applied screen protectors in the box. These two have them too.

As for the design, well, it will depend on your taste. Personally, we do prefer the look of the Realme C11. It has a textured surface on the back, with a distinctly large Realme logo and square glass for the camera. You can get it in Min Green or Pepper Grey.

On the other hand, the Vivo Y11 have the glass-like plastic finish on the back with color gradient paint job, which is starting to age and looks boring by now.

Display and Audio

A smartphone’s display quality, especially at this price, shouldn’t be a big issue for as long as they do the job. Both the Vivo Y11 and Realme C11 come with IPS panels with HD+ resolution. A FHD screen is just too much to ask for an entry-level smartphone.

However, the Realme C11 gets the one-up with its larger 6.5-inch size, versus the 6.35-inch on the latter.

As for the sound, both devices have single bottom-firing speakers, which should be enough for private listening. For a more immersive experience, you can plug in a pair of headphones via the 3.5mm jack on the bottom. But then again, since they are budget smartphones, they don’t come with free earphones in the box.

Hardware and Software

The MediaTek Helio G series was created to improve the gaming performance of smartphones, regardless of the price. That’s something you should expect on the Helio G35 on the Realme C11.

With its passable gaming prowess, you can also expect it to show off in other areas like productivity and other related tasks. With that, a couple of benchmarks and performance tests proves that the Realme C11 will have stronger performance than the Vivo Y11.

The newer processor also allowed the C11 to be equipped with the more reliable and battery-friendly Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. Albeit, as per usual, the Snapdragon 439 will have a slight advantage in battery efficiency.

Probably what’s really disappointing on the Y11 is that it still runs on Android 9 Pie. It’s been a while since Android 10 is out, and we’re losing hope that this device will get that update.

On the upside, both devices come with FM radio for times of calamity or offline music listening. But for those who are hoping for USB Type-C charging, we’ll have to wait until that technology becomes cheaper. For now, we’ll have to settle for microUSB.

Cameras

If you’re gonna use it for online classes and video conferencing, you might want to have a sharp selfie camera. That’s something you can get from the 8-megapixel front-facing sensor of the Vivo Y11. On the other hand, the C11 settles for a 5-megapixel camera but with still respectable quality.

Both devices share the same 13-megapixel primary and 2-megapixel depth sensors on the back. Those should be enough for casual snaps or recording video projects.

Battery

Having a large 5,000mAh battery is common on entry-level devices like these. It’s the companies’ way to compensate for the devices’ overall lack of flare.

Both the Y11 and C11 have the same 5,000mAh capacity with 10W charging. But with its more power-friendly processor, we expect longer screen-on time on the Y11.

Conclusion

People who are shopping in this category really want to get the value for every cent they are paying. If you’re one of them, then going with the Realme C11 is a no brainer.

It retails for only Php4,990, which is about Php500 cheaper than the Vivo Y11 with the same 2GB/32GB configuration. But despite being the affordable option, it has a more powerful processor and a larger screen. Those are the most important feature that you should prioritize, especially if you have a tight budget. You can learn more about it in our Realme C11 review.
