Apple is reported to use dedicated ARM processors for the next-generation Mac computers.

According to the report from Bloomberg, the American tech company is preparing to announce the switch of the next Mac lineup from Intel to ARM-based chipsets this upcoming WWDC 2020. The planned unveiling via live stream video will give the developers just enough time to optimize the macOS under a new architecture before the new Macs roll out in 2021.

The project, which has a code name Kalamata, will adopt the same technology in the A14 Bionic Chip found in current iPhones and iPads. It will also retain the macOS as the operating system.

The report also stated that Apple’s shift to ARM processors are based on Intel’s slowing performance gains. Tests that were done with the ARM processors showed significant improvements in performance particularly in the areas of graphics and running AI-powered apps.

This is the third time in Apple’s history that a Mac device will change its processors. From its records, the company equipped PowerPC from Motorola in the early ’90s. 15 years ago, late Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed the company’s move in bringing in Intel processors to its desktops and laptops.

It is safe to say that Apple will eventually make a full transition of its Mac lineup, including the top-of-the-line computing devices, to ARM-based processors.
