The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is now accommodating online transactions for driver licensing and vehicle registrations after opening an online portal, which comes in light of the danger posed by close contact due to the ongoing COVID-19.

A couple of days ago, LTO launched a website aimed at giving motorists an easy access to their records which effectively invalidates the need for such individuals to visit the nearby LTO office. Consequently, the procedure makes the processing of licenses and car registrations faster.

However, more than the ease of being able to transact the business remotely while online, the benefit primarily boils down to the offsetting of the likely spread of COVID-19 due to reduced contact.

As amazing as the idea is, the scope of the operation appears limited at the present. Meaning, that many areas of the country may still not yet adhere to the recently implemented initiative against the coronavirus.

As per LTO, the beneficiary of the online registration only affects Manila and the following areas: Bayombong, Laoag, Tagbilaran, Roxas, Ormoc, Dumaguete, Pagadian, Butuan, Lipa, Malaybalay, Naga, Calapan, Davao, Tagum, Baguio, and General Santos City.

One major benefit of the online platform is that it is available to serve driver’s license and vehicle registrations 24/7.

Making for another boon to the automated process via online is that motorists can now opt to pay their dues via cashless means (electronic), be it for their license renewal, car registration, or fines.

Alternatively, if in cases where personal meet-up at the office is more mandatory than optional, interested parties can also opt to use the platform to set an appointment in advance before heading to the site directly.

Despite the convenience, security makes for a major concern with the platform, especially regarding fake identities. But LTO guarantees that there is a system in place aimed to counter that.
