To avoid a looming ban in the US, its second biggest market after India (where it’s already taken down), TikTok maybe getting a new owner—Microsoft. But of course, China is not having it, threatening with retaliatory actions if TikTok sells its US operations.
Earlier this week, TikTok’s developer ByteDance revealed it currently is discussing with Microsoft for a potential sale that hands over full control of TikTok’s US operations to the American company. It’s a deal that, if it follows through, will be enough for US President Donald Trump to back down on his threat to ban the app.
According to Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US is abusing its power and targeting non-US companies under the guise of security concerns. Per an editorial in state-run China Daily, the Asian superpower vows it will counter the “planned smash and grab” of the US on a Chinese-made app.
