Google has recently introduced a new feature on Pixel phones that improves portrait photos shot in low-light.

Dubbed as the Night Sight, the new feature under the Portrait Mode allows Pixel 4a 5G and 5 users to capture sharp and bright images with natural-looking blurred backgrounds even in low-light environments. The feature is automatically activated in Portrait Mode when the phone’s camera detected that it’s dark enough.

For bright and vibrant portraits, there’s also Portrait Light integrated directly into Pixel Camera. This automatically enhances the lighting on the subject.

The Night Sight in Portrait Mode activates its autofocus capabilities on dark scenes using machine learning to keep subjects sharp. After predicting the depth of the photo, Pixel will blur the background to create the beautiful bokeh that we love in professional portraits.

The new feature is powered by Pixel’s new exposure bracketing technology that captures, aligns, and merges up to 15 photos to improve low-light detail.

To maximize the new feature, users may accentuate the background lighting and make sure to have soft and ambient lighting when taking portrait photos of someone else. They should also have a distance of within four feet between the subject while the subject should be at least more than six feet from the background.
