We share our unboxing experience, initial review and first impressions of the Huawei FreeBuds Pro.
In a span of a few years, Huawei has quickly built-up their Bluetooth earphone lineup with each new model showing progressive improvements over its predecessor.
Their latest, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro, are premium truly wireless earbuds that feature an industry leading 40 dB noise cancellation and a new modern design with a host of useful features to match.
We were sent a pair for review. And while that’s building up, I’d like to share our Huawei FreeBuds Pro unboxing experience, initial review and first impressions.
With a price of Php 7,999, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro are now available for pre-order at the Huawei Store from November 27 to December 3, 2020.
To make things sweeter, pre-orders come with a freebies that include a Band 4 worth Php 1,890 and an entertainment gift package worth Php 2,099. The free gifts total Php 3,989, which is pretty good considering the value is already half the price of the truly wireless earbuds.
Once unboxed, you’ll be greeted by the charging case. Right off the bat, it is well-made. It feels good in the hand and the material, while plastic, is quite solid.
The case itself is a little bit on the chunky side, but its still pocketable. The oval shape and smooth curves make sure of that.
The top flips over to reveal the Huawei FeeBuds Pro. I initially had trouble taking the earbuds out of the case. Thanks in part to the combination of its glossy finish, compact build, and the powerful magnets that hold them in place, they are difficult to grasp. It does get easier once you start getting the hang of it.
If you have a Huawei smartphone with the Huawei AI Life app installed, the earbuds are detected as soon as you take them out. If you have a different brand device, you can start the Bluetooth connection process by pressing and holding the button on the right side of the case. The app also lets you customize the controls and update the firmware, which I suggest you do before you start using them.
By the looks of it, the FreeBuds Pro have a compact design. It has an angular tip with a rectangular stem. On the inside part of the earbud, you’ll see a curious circular wear sensor that automatically pauses and plays the music when you remove or insert them in your ear.
The earbuds have what Huawei calls hybrid active noise cancellation. It uses inward and outward facing microphones to detect out-of-ear and in-ear ambient noise, and then uses its dynamic drivers to generate anti-noise frequencies.
The 11mm drivers also promises to deliver dynamic sound with impressive bass and clarity. And so far, I think they sound pretty good.
There also with four microphones on each earbud — two at the top and two at the bottom ends of the stems. It is equipped with anti-wind noise cancellation tubes that can eliminate wind noise.
The controls for the earbuds are gesture based, which is done on the stems. A long press cycles through the different modes — ANC, awareness, or normal. Swiping up or down adjusts the volume. Pinching once plays or resumes music playback; twice to go the next song; and trice to go back to the previous song.

As for the battery life, each earbud has 55mAh capacity while the case has 580mAh. Huawei says it can last up to 5 hours with ANC on and up to 8 hours with ANC off. The charging case charges via USB-C, but it also supports Qi wireless charging.
They say that making a good first impression is important. And this early on, I am very impressed with the Huawei FreeBuds Pro. I can confidently say that I am going to enjoy using the earbuds. My experience so far is very promising.
In the next days, I will continue putting it through its paces as I work up towards the full review. So stay tuned, and be sure to catch our post in the coming days.
