The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, better known by its acronym MTRCB, wants to regulate streaming apps like Netflix.

MTRCB is urging Philippine senators to create a policy that will allow them to regulate the movies, shows, and any other content shown on Netflix and other websites and providers that offer the same services in the Philippines. These may include HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV+, and more.

Jonathan Presquito, MTRCB Legal Affairs Division Chief, told the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship that the mandate is for the MTRCB to review all motion pictures being shown in the Philippines, no matter that the platform is.

Presquito said that they want to ensure the materials shown on these platforms are compliant with the MTRCB’s laws. He added that the board has jurisdiction to the content, regardless of the platform it’s in.

The MTRCB chief also highlighted that the said review process is also being implemented in other countries like South Korea. Albeit, Presquito said that they would still allow streaming services to flourish, but is asking to find the right balance.

Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel stated that they will look at the MTRCB’s proposal and would study how to implement it.
