Manila is the third-most expensive places in Southeast Asia to live in, according to a new study.
Based on the data analysis by shopping aggregator iPrice, the combined expenses that are essential for living (e.g., food, rent, and transportation) amount to Php50,798 in Manila. The net salary of the city’s inhabitants, meanwhile, is only Php18,900 on average, which is the lowest among the Southeast Asian countries mentioned in the report.
Given the cost far exceeding the average net salary, the report authors pondered on how Filipinos in Manila manage to get by and what their quality of life is. Indicating that the city has the second-worst traffic worldwide and that housing/property rental is the second-highest among ASEAN countries, the report basically implies there is not much leisure to enjoy there.
Even without expensive rental fees—a one-bedroom monthly rent in Manila is estimated to be Php22,000—the combined cost of living remains high at Php28,798.
For comparison, the Thailand capital Bangkok is just a notch costlier than Manila, with a monthly combined cost of living estimated at Php51,517. Singapore is found to be the most expensive, and by a greater extent, at Php119,732 per month.
