Last month, we learned that Huawei was looking to diversify its portfolio by entering the automotive industry and creating electric cars. It turns out there’s some truth to the report, as the smartphone maker has unveiled a hybrid car at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.

The SF5, as the new car is called, is not really made by Huawei itself, but by Seres, a carmaker that’s headquartered in California and backed by the Chongqing Sokon Industry Group in China.

The Seres SF5 was also first unveiled in 2019. But the one showcased at the recent motor show is an updated version with which Huawei helped design the powertrain module, which features a 1.5-liter gas engine and two electric motors.

Huawei claims the Seres SF5 is a “performance monster” that has a total system output of 405kW power and 820Nm torque. With a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas, the S5 has an estimated range of 1,000km. As for acceleration, Huawei claims 100km/hour in just 4.7 seconds. Huawei has also got the infotainment system covered, with interactive voice controls and Huawei Sound-powered speakers.
