PLDT, one of the Philippines’ biggest telecommunications company, along with its membership group, the Asia Direct Cable (ACD) Consortium, has announced its planned venture to submarine cable that will connect the Philippines with neighboring regions, China (Guangdong and Hong Kong), Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The said project is given to the capable hands of NEC Construction that will construct a 9400-kilometer ADC cable across targeted regions and is expected for completion by fourth quarter of 2022.
The endeavor is primarily aimed at bolstering PLDT’s resiliency on its international network stemming from the will-be developed route coming from the East and Southeast regions.

If successful, the project will result in a massive increase to PLDT’s technical capability to support bandwidth-intensive applications as underpinned by advanced technologies, including 5G, Internet-o-Things, Artificial Intelligence, and cloud services.
Furthermore, it will also substantially expand the company’s fiber optic technology that now spans a total of 338,000 kilometers nationwide.
The new Asia Pacific submarine cable will have multiple high-capacity optical fiber connections designed to handle over 140 Tbps of traffic. As a result, high capacity data transmission across East and Southeast Asia will be available. This will also help telco networks expansion in the said region.
